Directions

For each 8-serving strata: Crumble 1 lb. (450 g) sausage into large nonstick skillet on medium-high heat; cook 3 to 5 min. or until done, stirring frequently to break up sausage. Add 3 cups (750 mL) mushrooms, 1/2 cup (125 mL) each red peppers, green peppers and onions, and 1 tsp. (5 mL) thyme; cook 3 to 5 min. or until vegetables are crisp-tender, stirring frequently. Remove from heat. Stir in 1/3 cup (75 mL) Cheez Whiz. Set aside to cool slightly.

Place 1-1/2 qt. bread in half-size 2-inch hotel pan or in 13x9-inch baking dish lightly sprayed with cooking spray. Top with 1/3 cup (75 mL) shredded cheese and sausage mixture. Whisk 6 eggs, 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) milk and 1/3 cup (75 mL) Cheez Whiz until well blended; pour over sausage mixture. Cover with foil. Refrigerate at least 6 hours or overnight. Bring to room temperature before baking.

Bake, covered, in 350ºF (180ºC) standard oven 40 to 50 min. or until centre is set. Remove foil; top with 1/3 cup (75 mL) shredded cheese. Broil 2 to 3 min. or until cheese is melted. Let stand 5 min. before serving.

Substitute
Substitute 1 Tbsp. (15 mL) chopped fresh thyme for every 1 tsp. (5 mL) dried thyme.
Shortcut
To speed up preparation, sausage-vegetable mixture can be prepared in larger batches and cooled. Use about 1 qt. (1 L) mixture for each 8-serving strata.
